1. Prepare a checklist (the most basic)
The most basic task is to prepare a checklist of the things you need. Always prepare a checklist. I know it may sound childish but trust me, it is the best shopping method in case you have a bad memory. Also, it helps save a lot of time and money because you will avoid buying unnecessary things. So, write all that you need prior to shopping – either on paper or on your phone. Before shopping and preferably while at home, prioritize what is necessary and what can be bought later (more of it in the second point). This can ensure that you purchase things that you actually need and avoid unnecessary additional shopping costs.
2. Prioritize
Every one of us is unique and therefore, we all may have different priorities based on our situations. What shopping things should you prioritize? It may be anything, but the most basic necessities should always be given first priority.
First things first – Essential perishable items or perishable necessities. It can include anything from milk, egg, bread, water, etc… However, since these are perishable goods, make sure to check before you buy – as to how long you want them to last. Avoid overstocking them unless you plan to share them with someone else.
Next – Essential lasting items or lasting necessities. The next most important items to add to the checklist are those necessities that last longer (non-perishable essentials). It may range from vegetables, fruits, cereals to rice, flour, grains, pulses, etc. Here is where most of us spend too much or above how much we actually need. The important tip here is to know what you really need and how much of it is you really need.
Finally – Other non-essential things. What is essential and what is not will vary from one person to another. Some examples of this are tissue papers, shoes, stationery, plates, glasses, etc. Be careful not to overshoot your estimate of what you need in this category like many of us may do now and then.
3. Comparison of prices
If you are buying from a retail outlet, say a supermarket or any other store, always do a comparison with regard to prices especially for vegetables and grains. In most cases, your choices may vary as per the season and requirement so be wise and choose accordingly.
Pro tip: Even if there is a sale, do not end up buying unnecessary items. Remember, if there is a sale on an item worth 100 for 75 and you purchase it. In most cases, when you don’t really need it, you are not saving the 25 but actually spending the 75.
When there are big offers such as buy one and get one free, or cashback on purchase, just remember that these sales are held to clear out old or undesirable stock. So always wait and check the quality and your actual need. Never compromise on quality just to save a little money. Good food is necessary but a non–food grocery items like detergent or garbage bags at a discount store may not be.
4. Check online stores for cashback, coupons etc
Just like the previous point, in case you are living alone or prefer online shopping, then, try this tip. Fill your cart with all items that you need in different online stores. Compare prices in these stores, but also check if there are any cashback offers, promotional codes, or coupons.
In case you are a loyal customer of a specific store, it is totally fine and understandable. Keep in mind the costs you will be saving and the time you may take to research. If both these factors are good, then go ahead to make a good deal.
I cannot stress over this enough. “Never overbuy because of weekly sales”. Buy only what you need and is essential. Most importantly, prioritize. It always helps to save on unnecessary costs hands down! and reach your financial freedom goal.
5. Plan your meals while Grocery Shopping on a Budget
The most important task in planning your meals is to decide your grocery, based on the number of days you can store them. If you’re buying for a whole month, then, decide your meal plan first and check what you need. Once you know what you need, buy accordingly. So when it comes to buying what you need for your meal preps, always think as to how much food you would eat.
The best advice I have received on Grocery Shopping on a Budget is to shop once a week, as you will tend to hoard less and spend less too in the long run.
In case you cook only breakfast and dinner, then, probably you could use the food wisely. For instance, use the remaining dinner as breakfast and so on. I usually do this when I have pizzas for dinner. Any extra slices end up as my breakfast.
In case you buy meals from restaurants, then always be wise to reuse the packaging if possible and reduce the waste. Keep nature safe and stay eco-friendly and save on unnecessary costs.
6. Shop at known places or websites
Always shop in familiar stores, as you know where the products are kept and you can shop quickly and save a lot of time. I personally have three favorite stores which keep offering good discounts. But most often, end up in just one store. This is so because I can finish my shopping faster and can avoid getting distracted by attractive deals that do not match my needs.
The preferential treatment by staff to their loyal customers is also nice. Also, the shopping points which can later be converted into rewards are a big plus point too.
7. Calculate to save while Grocery Shopping on a Budget
Always shop with a calculator. We mean, always know how much you want to spend based on past experiences. Save up any ongoing coupons which can be used when needed.
8. Learn a little cooking
If you have time, try learning to cook on your own. It helps you stay healthy, control what you are putting in your body, and avoid costs on unhealthy and processed foods. Also, the fact that you have to cook will make you buy things moderately and help you save a lot especially if you live alone. You will also know how much is too much.
These are some of the ways to buy the grocery on a budget. I hope these tips will help you save a little.
